    Whack-a-dragon [Mission]

Post by Roland Gates on Wed Feb 08, 2017 4:35 pm

As much as Roland was flattered to be entrusted with a mission of this caliber, he obviously had his doubts about going toe to toe with something the likes of a dragon. The mission itself wasn't all that complicated, a dragon had somehow managed to trap itself in the tunnel and was disturbing travellers and workers alike, putting productivity in the area to a stop. Given the importance of the mining trade in Ryuujin on top of it having already injured several people, Ryuujin simply wouldn't stand for it. The bottom line was that Roland had to get rid of the dragon somehow, whether that meant reasoning, forcing or outright killing the flying reptile was all the same in terms of payment. Roland would of course have preferred if he could talk it out with the dragon rather than fight it, then again they wouldn't have sent him if the beast could be reasoned with. Even then, he'd rather blast it out of the tunnel than killing it. If worst came to worst though, who could say?

He'd been given a map of this section of the tunnels to aid him on his quest, no one having been brave enough to simply guide him there. Still, at least he had a way of finding his way down here. Looking at the complexity of this section alone, he counted himself lucky for finding his way to Vulcran at all on that fateful day. Come to think of it, he imagined most travellers would get lost and starve without proper means of navigation, and especially so considering how the tunnels were prone to changing every so often. Even the map he was holding couldn't be trusted for more than a week at best, meaning he had to take swift action to assure the path to the city would still be there when he got back.

He'd noted that the tunnels felt slightly hotter than they had during his previous few passings, contemplating if it could be the dragon's fault or if he was just imagining it. Speaking of the dragon, he realised he'd been walking on the straight and narrow for a while now and consulted the map to learn that he wouldn't have to turn for quite a while yet. "Well map, you do know best"

The heat of the tunnels stinging her skin, Ilia was not having the best trip in the world.

She climbed down from a whole in the ground to another level of the tunnels, and surprise surprise, more of the same. She felt an ever-present need to bang her head vigorously against the wall. She'd heard about the rampaging dragon from a bar patron in Hyouden, and despite it being a fire dragon, she felt a need to aid it, or at least, aid the people it was hurting. So she took to to the skies, and entered Ryuujin for the first time in all her life. However, she hadn't expected it to be so difficult to simply find her way into the minds, which was hidden somewhere within these labyrinthine tunnels. Crouching to the ground, she took a deep breath, trying not to have a panic attack. The darkness was already rather difficult for her, and being cramped and overheated in here was certainly not helping.

"Well map, you do know best!" A voice echoed from down the corridor, and Ilia stood up immediately, scanning her immediate vicinity. In the distance, she saw the brief outline of an approaching figure, and ducked behind a random outcropping. 'What is someone doing in here?' She thought wildly, her brain racing as she thought through the possibilities. The stone was hard against her back as she pressed against it, attempting to blend into the rock face as the footsteps slowly approached. Sneaking a peek out of her hiding spot, she was close enough to notice details on the figure. Blonde hair, accompanied by a dark coat that aided him in blending into the rocks. Still, Ilia swore she recognized him from somewhere... It hit her like a ton of bricks.

"Roland?" She called from the darkness, hoping not to spook him too bad.

It was a cathartic experience, meditating in the tunnels beneath Ryuujin. The air was filled with an extremely thick heat, but it was nonetheless incredibly wet beneath the earth. The smell of earth and rocks filled the air, and singing hot water dripped down the cave walls deep beneath the earth. It opened pores and regulated breathing. It helped Yasha concentrate, calmed his nerves. The only sounds he heard were the silent rumblings of the gargantuan rock wyrms that called these tunnels their home. A peaceful species for the most part, and they rarely crossed the tunnels near the surface. It was a safe space for Yasha. He did this every couple months. Abraxas' unnaturally extreme landscapes provided a wide array of secluded spots for him to pray and clear his mind.

That was, unless he wasn't interrupted. The defeaning silence and density of the walls made every little sound travel extremely far. To the point where you could hear the breath of someone whispering hundreds of meters away. The pitch of a regular voice and footsteps were clearly audible for quite a distance. And while Yasha would have liked to go on meditating, knowing there was something going on in these parts would give him no peace of mind to continue his practice. He opened his eyes and decided to float through some forks in his path. The enourmous images of two hands that floated around him provided enough light to lead the way. Yasha had remembered the exact way he was had descended into the depths of the tunnels, and he was sure the sound had emanated from somewhere in the same way that he had used.

Proving himself right, his two floating spirit appendages gave light to two figures standing in the large, round, wyrm-made corridor. Moving one hand near himself and one hand in between the two to get a look at their faces, he had a calm expression and a friendly smile on his face. "Why, hello there. What could you two be doing down here? I did not expect any adventurers this time of year. Is there something wrong?" He pronounced, in his usual, all-too-casual tone. He was sitting with his legs crossed in mid-air, nothing on but his pants. He was not sure how these two would react, but he was positive he could clear up any misunderstandings through simple communication.

Roland stopped dead in his tracks, attempting to locate whoever had spoken his name through the darkness. The speaker was unmistakably female, he knew as much from the voice alone, and he couldn't of course shake the feeling that he'd heard it before. That paired with the fact that the supposed woman had called out to him just means that he probably knew her from somewhere. Not that he could think of any woman he'd met in Abraxas so far that was likely to stray so far into a place like this.

Still, as he took a step towards the figure, it finally dawned on him. They'd met not too long ago after all. "Ili-...?" "Why, hello there. What could you two be doing down here? I did not expect any adventurers this time of year. Is there something wrong?" "...aaaahh?" He knew how to pronounce Illia's name just fine, it was just that sudden addition of this strange floating figure appearing out of absolutely nowhere that had thrown him off guard. Roland couldn't help but feel that he'd been careless, having not noticed the great magical energies radiating from both Illia and this new arrival. He supposed the heat must be throwing off his senses somewhat,  that being the most plausible explanation as to how he hadn't sensed either of them until just now.

He took a moment to gather his thoughts and looked over to the strange floating man, he'd noted his least to say abnormally long earlobes. As strange as this man might have looked to others though, Roland had spent most of lis life mingling with the supernatural, he knew better than to question it by now. And considering the friendly greeting, the man hardly seemed like much of a threat. Having gathered his bearings, Roland turned to answer the man with a smile. "Hi there! Nothing wrong I assure you... or well, there IS but that's why i'm here, no need to worry." Come to think of it, there was someone Roland was worried about, regardless of how seemingly powerful she was. With that thought he glanced over at the girl once more. "This man aside Ilia, what are you doing down here?" As much as Roland was set on fulfilling his mission, he was half about ready to escort Ilia back to the surface if need be and come back later.

Ilia jumped as both Gates and another voice began speaking to her at the same time, and she whirled around as a large, strange glowing hand floated right next to her face. There was a second one just a few feet away from her, floating next to a man who appeared like something out of a history book. His long earlobes gave away his non-human side, but he was also seemingly floating in midair, which would probably help too. He was clothless, aside from some ragged looking pants, and appeared just as surprised to see either of them down here. Glancing back and forth between the two, she pressed her hand to her face in frustration.

"This man aside Ilia, what are you doing down here?" She was shaken from her thoughts as she heard Gates address her directly, and she looked towards him with a sly smile. "Well, I heard about the raging dragon from one of my friends, who's a mine worker," She explained casually, cracking her arm slightly as she thought about all the climbing she just did. "And let's just say that I have a vested interest in resolving it." She explained, not eager to reveal her draconic heritage to him. That was the primary reason she was down here, to restory humanity's outlook on dragons, but she wasn't exactly sure what he, no, what either of them were doing down here. "I'm surprised to see you, though. Why have you come all the way down here?" She asked, tilting her head curious.

Ilia was partially glad she had chosen to revert forms before encountering either of these two, as it would have taken a lot of explaining and she could easily have been mistaken for a monster. Her hair pulsed, green energy rippling through it, much to her dismay. It often did that after she reverted forms. Turing to the other man, she smiled. "And I don't believe we've met! The name is Ilia, nice to meet you." She introduced, extending a hand to the floating man. However, she seemed to think twice, and turned and extended it to the large hand floating next to her.

Ilia had Roland's full attention as she explained just what she of all people could possibly be out to do so deep in these tunnels of all places. "Well, I heard about the raging dragon from one of my friends, who's a mine worker," Roland raised an eyebrow at her explanation, she was looking for the dragon too? What for he wondered. "And let's just say that I have a vested interest in resolving it." While he supposed it wasn't any of his business anyway, he still couldn't just leave her fending for herself considering what sort of things roamed down here besides the dragon. Not to mention that the odds of her finding the dragon and/or getting out being abyssmal without a proper map.

"I'm surprised to see you, though. Why have you come all the way down here?" He supposed there was no harm in telling her about his mission, seeing as they were appearently out for the very same thing. "Same as you, i've been tasked with getting the dragon out of the mines" While he wasn't sure whether Ilia had heard him, she'd turned to greet the mysterious third party of the conversation. Wait... where did he go? Roland had turned to see the man's response only to realise that there was no trace what so ever left of him. Where did he go? "Well, I suppose that leaves the two of us" As much of a mystery the man's disappearance was, Roland couldn't afford too much time on distractions.

"If you're serious about the dragon, at least stick with me" Safety in numbers, the very basics of warfare. Roland even made sure to wave the map in her direction to make his case. "That is... if you want to see the surface again" He realised how that had come out sounding more like a threat than anything else. "Not to threaten you or anything, i'm just saying: I can get us out of here"
